Mike was a terrific guy. He was a bit older and lived just a block or two away. Mike was very artistic. My mother kept one of his pen and ink drawings on her dining room wall for a great many years. He and I managed to get into a fair amount of trouble now and then. When I learned Mike had been killed in Vietnam, it shook me to the core. That was one of the many reasons I enlisted in the military.
I was in a lot of art classes with Mike, he was so much fun and so talened. I was also hit so hard when I heard he was killed. It made the war real for me. I still think about him.
I had just come home on leave between my 1st and 2nd trip to Viet Nam. I came to see Mr. Hoban who was the woodshop teacher that had taught me so much. I helped Mike in the woodshop class many times on the Woody that he was restoring. Mr. Hoban was very upset about Mike being killed in Viet Nam because he and Mike had argued many times about joining the military. Mike didn't want to join but Mr. Hoban was pushing him to join. He thought it was his fault that Mike had been killed. I know I was very sad bout it after spending many hours working with Mike in the woodshop.I also felt very bad for Mr. Hoban who was really having a hard time dealing with it.
How well I remember Mike! He was such a talented artist. Losing Mike in Viet Nam really brought the war "home" for me. What a tragedy!
I remember Mike and Mark playing "soldiers" all around the neighborhood when we were kids. They were just boys doing guy things. When the Viet Nam Wall was on display in Bremerton, I found his name engraved there. So final, real, and sad!
